5 SEO Tips to Improve Your Ranking Today
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has gained a lot of importance these days. It is all about promoting websites to reach the first spots on search engine results. SEO helps you to increase your ranking on Google page rank. Now, since SEO is a very important exercise, many companies have been established with a specialization in the various techniques of search engine optimization.
There is tons of information on SEO out there, but it is important for any webmaster to know the solid basics of Search Engine Optimization. If you haven’t noticed, there’s countless blogs and websites out there offering advice about SEO with great uncertainty.
The following are some of the SEO tips that you can implement today to improve your ranking on search engines:
SEO TIP #1: Be Ready to Learn About SEO
If you plan to tackle SEO alone, without hiring the services of a company or experts, then you must be ready to learn plenty of ideas. Luckily, the internet is loaded with ideas and tips. But which ones are actually worth implementing, right? Well, I would suggest you stick with those websites and authors that you trust. You certainly can’t go wrong with Forbes, Entrepreneur and websites of that caliber. But also, what small business websites do you typically go to for your website needs? If they’ve worked for you in the past, go to them as well. (If you are wondering whether to create your own website or hire it out, read this article for the pros and cons of both.)
SEO TIP #2: Choose the Right Keywords for Your Website
The keyword research should be based on volume and competitiveness of the desired keyword. There should be a balance between high volume and low competition. For instance, Google shows 3.1 billion search results for the term “keywords.” Now, you had better not choose this word as the keyword for your website as it is in intense competition. Furthermore, Google returned around 704,000 search results for the phrase “search engine keywords.” You should choose this keyword as it is in less completion and can bring some visitors to your website.
One of the most important parts of SEO is the keywords. On-page SEO is what affects your results on search engines. Therefore, you must get it right! Before you even build your website, make sure you already have chosen keywords (around 2 or 3). Your web page will be based on the keywords you have chosen. The page title is the single most essential on-page SEO factor so include them in there!
One final recommendation on keywords is, don’t just go for keywords related to title searches. Instead of using just “cheesecake recipe” as your keyword, why not use the phrase “how to make the best cherry cheesecake”. You will certainly appear in search results for people who use that specific phrase, but you may not appear on search results for people who may use the term “cheesecake recipe”. It’s important to know your audience and their search preferences. Mix up your use of keywords and, above all, know your audience!
SEO TIP #3: Know Your Competition
Ever heard the saying “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer?” It is very important to track your competition. Competition exists, and it’s essential to keep tabs on those sites that are ranking high for your chosen keywords. The key idea behind ranking well on Google is to analyze top ranking sites with your targeted keywords, find exactly what they are doing and then do those things.
SEO TIP #4: SEO-Friendly Domain Names
When deciding what domain name to choose, it is best to try and include your main keyword(s) in that name. If you can include all your keywords in there, then do it, but don’t overdo it. Its always good to keep your domain name short and easy to remember. I usually tell people no more than three words, and if you can, try and avoid using hyphens as it tends to look spammy.
Take our domain name, for instance. As a company, our name is Alianzas IT Consulting, Corp. But, when we expanded into web design, we chose a domain name “Alianzas Web Design” because we wanted to rank for the keyword “web design” since that was precisely what the purpose of our expansion was for.
SEO TIP #5: Build a Sitemap
Such a simple task, yet many forget or don’t do it at all. Your site needs to be crawl-friendly for it to be indexed in major search engines like Google and this is where a sitemap comes in handy. You need a sitemap, especially for large websites. If this is the case, make several sitemap pages. Roughly not more than 80 links for each.
Plugins like Yoast SEO will create the sitemap for you. So, if you have this plugin, you can easily take the sitemap and send it to Google and other search engines.
Let’s wrap this up.
SEO is not an “implement and forget” task. It’s something that needs to be revisited periodically, at the very minimum every couple of months to make sure your keywords are still giving you the results you are looking for.
Implementing SEO early on in the web design phase is a huge plus as far as SEO is concerned. At Alianzas, we were able to take one of our clients from page 10 search results to page 1 within the first two weeks of going live by creating the website based on keywords during the design phase of the project.
