Starting a New Business at the Age of 49!
In about six months I will be celebrating my 50th birthday. And at the very young age of 49, I’m starting a new business venture. I may be way past the Millennials’ age group, but I’m busy charting my own road to success. I’m proof that age is only a number. It all starts with passion, talent and a workhorse attitude.
Alianzas IT Consulting is born
I started my own business, Alianzas IT Consulting, Corp in 2011 (I was well into my 40s by then) because I was fed up with being paid whenever my “boss” thought it convenient. You see, before starting a new business, I worked as a consultant for two companies. The second company was a true nightmare. I would get paid whenever the client paid him, not on a regular schedule. I would have to put my foot down and refuse to travel or work until I got paid if I wanted to get paid. Another consultant I know ended up never getting paid all that was owned to her before that company ended up going bankrupt. Luckily for me, I got all I was due and ran FAST!!
Today, Alianzas IT Consulting, Corp, works with other consulting companies and hospitals on IT projects, makes six digits a year in revenue consistently, pays income on time to three people, and has a solid reputation. It’s the business that I never dreamed I’d own, but am so grateful I do. Alianzas IT Consulting, Corp provides IT support to hospitals in the United States. We specialize in McKesson’s HealthQuest system. My clients are amazing! The relationships I’ve built over my 20+ years of health IT experience are the key to my success. Not only are my clients repeat customers, but many have become part of my inner circle of close friends. You want to know something else? Many of my repeat customers, I have never met in person. We’ve spoken on the phone and exchanged emails. That’s it! I have been able to sell my services to businesses in the United States from my little town of Isabela, Puerto Rico by word of mouth and a solid reputation.
Starting a new business
So, why if all is working well, am I starting a new business? Well, for me, it’s always been about how I can give back. I have had such a great career. There really isn’t much I can do to create opportunities for others in the current revenue stream for a number of reasons, but I can do so, by starting a new business (or a new division in my case). With this new business venture, I want to be able to share my experience with businesses and help them expand their reach. I want to help them reach more customers and increase their revenue. At the same time, I want to bring in local talent (maybe some of those entitled Millennials even) and help them start their careers as well.
Starting a new business is scary. I get that! Things are tough on this island and I’m sure they are just as tough where you are as well. Businesses are closing shop left and right. People are leaving and moving elsewhere. But that doesn’t have to be everyone’s story. The brave, the people that put in the work, that have the passion and the talent it takes can beat those odds. They can create a business they love from where they are right now. If they have been in business for a while, they can run their business model with their eyes closed. It’s second nature to them. But they could be leaving money on the table. That’s where I come in! My business has been completely online in nature from the very start. I can help companies create that online presence that their current brick-and-mortar business is lacking.
Everyone is online nowadays and if their business isn’t reaching their customers online, they are literally leaving money on the table. Alianzas Web Design is more than just developing a website for them. It is about creating a website specific for their customers with lead magnets, social media integration, even e-commerce. It’s about learning about their business, their customers, their service or product, and optimizing it all into an online presence that meets their goal. That’s Alianzas Web Design’s ultimate mission. To DESIGN a better world for our customers, employees, shareholders and community, one website at a time.
Living the Values Together
When I say DESIGN, I mean living our DESIGN values. In the image within this blog post, you can see what our Values are. (You can easily PIN this image on Pinterest if you want). These are the values that drive, not only my business, but my personal life as well. It’s about getting up every morning, two or three hours before anyone else in order to do more with the 24 hours a day that we are all given. It’s about encouraging teamwork and family spirit in everyone I come in contact with. It’s about staying humble, even when you don’t have to. It’s about igniting the fire of creativity, working with passion and having fun along the way. It’s about growing my business and my clients’ businesses everyday, while learning from those that are ahead of me on this road to success. In summary, it’s about nurturing long-lasting relationships with my customers, employees, shareholders and community, just as I would with my family and friends. We are all in this together. No one is on an isolated island. No one is superior to the other. We are all just at different stages in life. We all depend on one another. So, why not work together?
