Is your website mobile-friendly?
How many people do you know that do NOT have a mobile device of some sort? Mobile is indeed changing the world. It’s changing the way we communicate with each other, but it is also changing the way we shop. Having a mobile-friendly website is critical to your business.
What is a mobile-friendly website?
A desktop version of a website might be difficult to view and use on a mobile device. The typography could be too small. It may require you to pinch and zoom in order to read the words or view the images. It could require so many things from the user, that the user becomes frustrated and moves on to the next website.
A mobile-friendly website basically means that your website – images, typography, buttons, videos, links – is easy to access and read from mobile devices, even for those that have big fingers and less than perfect Superman vision.
How does this affect you and your business?
Here’s a great statistic I found from Google:
In the USA, 94% of people with smartphones search for local information on their phones. Interestingly, 77% of mobile searches occur at home or at work, places where desktop computers are likely to be present.
Google will give higher ranking on mobile search results if your website is mobile-friendly. On the other hand, if it is not, your website traffic could decrease.
Let’s say your website is not mobile-friendly, but your competitors is. If your customers use their mobile device to find the products and services you sell, the probability that your competitor’s website is displayed over yours is much higher. Your past customers will find your competitor’s website, not yours.
How do I know if my website is mobile-friendly?
Lucky for us, Google has a great tool we can use for free. Access this tool HERE, enter your website’s URL (for example, www.mywebsite.com), press the Analyze button on the right hand side and wait for Google to analyze your site.
We took our client’s site, Expert Travel, and ran it thru the test.
They are mobile-friendly!!!! Yay!!!
Stay away from Google’s Naughty List
Google’s search engines will add to their ‘Naughty List’ mobile websites that have:
- Text that is unreadable or pictures that require zooming or scrolling in order to decipher
- Tap-targets that are inadequately spaced
- Unplayable content
In Google’s own words,
We’re boosting the ranking of mobile-friendly pages on mobile search results. Now searchers can more easily find high-quality and relevant results where text is readable without tapping or zooming, tap targets are spaced appropriately, and the page avoids unplayable content or horizontal scrolling.
Oh no, my website is not mobile-friendly? What now?
Inhale peace. Exhale frustrations. Follow Google’s recommendations.
Here’s an image from another website, not created by Alianzas Web Design, that I ran thru the tool.
Google will inform you what makes your website not mobile-friendly. These are the areas that need to be corrected. That is in the first column of the image above.
They will also recommend how to make your page mobile-friendly on the right-most column. Choose the one that applies to you and follow their instructions.

Not a web developer, but have one?
Call your website developer and talk to him/her about this. Ask them to make your site mobile-friendly. Then run your website again thru Google’s tool to verify. All’s well that ends well.
